At a time when plastic waste is threatening our oceans and ecosystems, one Chilean company, Algramo, is paving the way for a more sustainable future. Founded by Jose Manuel Moller eight years ago, Algramo started with a simple yet powerful idea: make zero-waste shopping accessible to middle- and lower-income neighbourhoods. By using contactless vending machines that refill reusable containers with cleaning products, Algramo reduces waste and cuts consumer costs—after all, “Algramo” means “by the gram.”
Algramo’s innovative containers have built-in RFID tags, transforming everyday bottles into “smart bottles.” These bottles track usage, allow payment by the ounce, and make it easy for users to monitor their balance through a connected app.
After achieving an 80% bottle reuse rate in Santiago, Algramo caught the eye of Unilever. Together, they developed a mobile refill system using electric tricycles to bring liquid laundry detergent directly to customers’ doors. This concept is expanding globally, with recent launches in New York City thanks to Closed Loop Ventures.
While Algramo’s initial focus has been on cleaning products like Clorox, Pine-Sol, and Softsoap, the company is exploring opportunities to include food items in its dispensers. Their partnership with Nestlé to sell Purina dog food in Santiago is just the beginning.
Changing consumer behaviour is never easy, but Algramo’s approach of starting with trusted household brands is helping to make reusing bottles the new norm. By partnering with major FMCG companies and leveraging smart technology, Algramo is not just reducing plastic waste—it’s making sustainable shopping easy, convenient, and affordable for everyone.
As Algramo continues to expand, it’s setting a new standard for zero-waste shopping. Let’s support and learn from these innovations as we work together to reduce plastic pollution and create a circular economy.
